Today, I want to talk about decisions.
There are times in our lives when we are faced with a big decision. (Sometimes it is actually a small decision with a big impact.)
I was recently presented with an incredible opportunity. I passed on it.
I am coming to my first year mark of 181° Productions being in business! I can’t believe how fast the time has gone. There have been numerous challenges but all in all, it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I am in the stage in my business where I am looking at how I can expand 181° by finding the right people to help me do so. When I first launched 181°, I was asked by a few people if this business was now my end goal or if I was still open to new opportunities. My answer remains the same: I want to continue to grow my business and make it as successful as possible yet at the same time, I will never close myself off to the right opportunity.
I was recently presented with an opportunity to move out West and take a position in the Marketing department of a large and growing company. The position would have provided me with a steady job with a steady pay and regular work hours (for the most part). It was one of the few times when the decision to take it or not was truly mine. In the past, I have sought out jobs or experiences. If I got them, then great, I was meant to get them and therefore, I would do them. This time around, it was not the same- it was completely up to me to make up my mind. I certainly did not take the decision lightly. I weighed the pros and cons heavily but at the end of the day, I had to listen to my gut. And my gut was telling that it was not right. On paper, it was fantastic but it meant pushing my business to the side, leaving loved ones I was not ready to leave yet and uprooting to the other side of the country. Some day, the right opportunity will be there for me. Whether the opportunity presents itself to me or I seek it out – It will be there and I need to trust in that.
My point today is to say that you should always be open to new opportunities but that doesn’t necessarily mean they are always going to be the right opportunity. It is okay to take a step back and analyze the situation. As scary as it might be, you will know if you have made the right decision or not if at the end of the day, you listen to your instincts with an open mind.
